Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling certain 2023 Rebel 300 motorcycles due to the potential for oil to leak from the right engine case cover. Based on their production records, Honda says 1,461 motorcycles may have this defect.

In its Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda says:

"Due to the improper production sequence of the right engine crankcase cover, paint was misapplied to the inner surface of the press-fit plug hole. When the engine temperature rises, the paint can soften, allowing the plug to come out of the hole."

Describing the safety risk, Honda says:

"If the plug comes out, oil can leak or spray onto the exhaust pipe and/or adhere to the rear tire while the motorcycle is in operation, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury."

Honda places the blame for this problem on its component supplier for not following the correct production sequence.

Honda has already notified its dealers. Owner notification will begin and end on or about 06/05/2023 via mail.

Honda will ask registered owners to take their motorcycles to an authorized Honda Powersports Dealer. The dealer will then replace the right crankcase cover with a non-defective one at no cost. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement in accordance with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
