FERRYLAND, N.L. — Police say an ATV driver is lucky to have survived without serious injuries after striking a steel cable hung at neck height along the former railbed trail between Bay Bulls and Witless Bay.
In a statement, Ferryland RCMP warned ATV drivers of recent traps or obstacles set along the trail. The alert comes after an ATV driver travelling on a section of the trail near Dean's Road was knocked off his ATV after a steel cable strung across the trail hit the operator's helmet.
"The rider, who was travelling at a reduced rate of speed, was incredibly fortunate to survive without serious injuries," police said.
Police have also received reports of trees that have been cut and placed to block sections of the railbed trail.
Mounties said that placing an obstacle that could harm ATV riders is a serious offence that poses a severe risk. Those responsible could face up to 10 years in prison if someone is injured and life imprisonment if someone dies.
Ferryland RCMP asks off-road vehicle operators to be cautious and travel at reduced speeds.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
