Grand Valley Power, second utility to bolt from Xcel as wholesale supplier
FILE - Tom Walch, CEO of Grand Valley Power, visits the site of the cooperative's solar power plant off 29 Road and Interstate 70 in February 2019.
Grand Valley Power will be exercising its option to stop buying wholesale power from Xcel Energy, one of two western Colorado electric cooperatives to announce this week that they will be bolting from Xcel to better control their wholesale costs.
Both Grand Valley Power in Mesa County and Yampa Valley Electric Association in far-northwest Colorado plan to stop buying power from Xcel in 2028 and start purchasing it from Guzman Energy under 15-year contracts providing for fixed wholesale power rates.
